Planning and Inspection

Ensuring air, marine, rail and road safety is a huge task. Transport Canada develops and enforces safety regulations and standards in order to prevent and manage safety risks in all modes of transportation. Transport Canada mandates that all bridges and transportation infrastructure must be inspected by their owners in order to ensure continued safe operation and protection of the public at large. In the mid 1990’s SEMA recognized that many smaller railway owners simply did not have the resources on staff to satisfy Transport Canada regulations. To that end, SEMA has developed an experienced planning and design group capable of assisting owners with their complete bridge plant management. Our planning and design capacity can be either a stand-alone service or part of our larger turnkey service which we also offer our clients. In summary, SEMA has on staff an experienced group of structural engineers, experienced bridge inspectors, and the necessary bridge inspection equipment (hi-rail bridge inspection vehicle) to carry out either visual or detailed structural inspections.
Planning and Inspection Services Offered:

Visual and or Detailed Structural Inspections and sealed reports
Bridge Ratings based on the inspection findings
Culvert Inspections and Culvert Maintenance Programs
5 Year Bridge Management Programs
Representation in meetings with Transport and Regulatory Officials
Our 5 Year Bridge Management Programs are put together based on the findings of our field inspections. Typically, the 5 Year Program includes an itemized bridge / culvert plant list, recommended dates for a given specific repair, and a budget estimate for each repair. Based on the 5 Year Program, owners are able to properly and accurately budget for their structural maintenance requirements over the coming 5 years.
